ONGOING HOMEWORK
Regular Weekly Homework is expected to be about 30 minutes daily including:
10 minutes of Reading from a book selected from:
Reading texts in class at an appropriate level (students should use the 5 finger rule to select texts at their level - hold up a finger when reading about 100 words each time you can't read a word; if you have 5 fingers, the text is too hard; if you have no fingers, the text is too easy); online Reading such as Ziptales or RAZ kids.
10 minutes Spelling - from the weekly focus list words created from errors made by individual students in the Weekly Pre-Tests based on the Diana Rigg Spelling program or from individually tailored programs.
See Spelling Page in English tab at the top for the Year 1 to 5 Diana Rigg Sight words list.
10 minutes Mathematics
Set Mathletics tasks - 10 tasks are set each week - at least one should be done each day Monday - Friday so that weekly no more that 5-6 are left incomplete
and/or each week, select one of the skills below to focus on - you can use Sumdog and Studyladder to practise these skills too.
learning tables
2, 5, 10, 11,12 and square numbers in Semester 1; 3, 4, 6, 7 in Term 3; 8 and 9x in Term 4.
skip counting forwards and backwards
count in 2s, 5s, 10s from a 2, 5 or tens number (eg count in 2s from 2 or 26 to at least 100; count in 5s from 5 or 155 to at least 200, count in 10s from 10 or 170 to at least 300)
skip counting forwards and backwards
count in 2s and 10s from other given numbers (e.g. count in 2s from 35 onwards and back; count in 10s from 139 onwards and up to 1000 by the end of the year.
learning quick mental facts:
add and subtract facts to 10 (e.g. fact 8+2 = 10, turnaround fact 2+8=10; inverse fact 10-8=2; second inverse fact 10-2=8);
add and subtract facts to 20 (e.g, 14+ 6 = 20, turnaround fact 6 + 14 = 20; inverse fact 20 - 14 = 6, second inverse fact 20 - 6 = 14)
add and subtract facts to 100 (e.g. 27 +73 = 100, turnaround fact 73+ 27 = 100; turnaround fact 100 - 27 =73 and second turnaround fact 100 - 73 =27
extended number facts (e.g. If I know 3 + 6 = 9 then I also know that 30 + 60 = 90 and 300 + 600 = 900
and 3000 + 6000 = 9000
